Facebook .. acting as a mirror to ur life and ur networks..

FACEBOOK as the name indicates its a platform where u can present your abilities, interests, pictures and anything else a user wants to post(with some limitations ;) )..

Launched by Harvard sophomore Mark Zuckerberg in April 2004..

(The analysts think he could be the nation's richest man under 25, with a net worth estimated at $1.5 billion!!!) ..

If a college student is asked about the facebook its almost like asking do u know what is a computer..Yes facebook phenomenon has swept the college landscape..

Students of about more than 2000 colleges are using it for chatting with friends, meet new people, find parties and help with academics..

Well, now it's signing up nearly 1 million new users a week. By the end of August there were 36 million of them.
And these aren't just the tweens or college kids you might suspect; the fastest-growing segment of Facebook users is over 35, a group that represents 11 percent of all site users.

Zuckerberg's company acts as a model for how communication, connection and commerce can work online..

Purpose of facebook and steps used to acheive it:

Zuckerberg wanted to create a "social graph"online -the web of people's real world relationship.
(thats why facebook is different from other social networks..like myspace which encouraged users to create new identities and meet and link to people they barely knew).

He wanted to create it in such a way that whenever a user logged on instead of greetings by Google News like aggregator, a collection of headlines and blog postings, written or handpicked by your closest friends and relatives will appear.. (it would be lke attending a dinner party through people whom u know and trust :))..

In his words:
"People already have their friends, acquaintances, and business connections,So rather than building new connections, what we are doing is just mapping them out."

Here users are encouraged to post personal information — colleges attended, workplaces, email addresses. Facebook also emphasizes honesty.

step 1:
make it easier for friends to communicate with one another
step 2:
extend Facebook's membership to the entire world
step 3:
open the site to developers and encourage them to build Facebook applications that would keep people signing up and coming back to the site.

For the accomplishment of step 1 our hero introduced news feed(which automatically broadcasts users important activites to others in their network). This new feature was anounced on sept5,2006.
There were many protests from the users becauze instead of making communication easier they felt it revealed their information without users permission!!

Instead of removing newsfeed wat he (our hero ofcourse) did is , he posted a 485-word open letter to his users, apologizing for the surprise and explaining how they could opt out of News Feed if they wished. It clicked !!

Now it was time for the second step, step2: let anyone in the world join.
Zuckerberg took a risk (well we should have the courage to take risk if want to move to higher heights)..
and this step of risk taking gave a fruitful result..
By January 2007, Facebook's user base had grown to nearly 14 million, up from almost 9 million in September!! great isnt it?

As the number of users increased the next problem was how to satisfy all of their needs?!!
Zuckerberg had to come up with a solution for this that is site was in bad need of more application which lead to the third and most audecious step 3.
Here Zuckerberg opened the site for independent developers.Among the 85 initial applications in facebook picnick (a online photo editing site by Sposato) was the one.

100000 users downloaded it within three days and this miracle happened becauze of the news feed which notified other friends about the download).

Users no longer need to search for applications that they may not even know they want; instead, the applications find them :) .

we should honestly thank our hero. wat say?
Hey one more thing, now u can keep facebook in your pocket and take it wherever u go!!
I am talking about facebook for IPHONE..
